Our story

Cloth made slowly, by hand, carries something cloth made quickly never can.

A Story of Threads began with that simple conviction. We are a small, values-led brand making hand-woven shawls with artisans in Kutch, India, and we would rather you bought one piece you keep for twenty years than five you forget.

Weaver in Kutch, Bhuj

Where it begins

Kutch, Bhuj, India.

Our shawls are woven in the Bhuj region of western India by artisans from rural communities whose families have worked the handloom for generations. The patterns, the striped end panels, the hand-tied tassels: all of it belongs to a weaving tradition far older than we are. We work alongside it rather than over it.

Hand-tied tassels on a merino wool shawl

Made by hand, slowly

Six to ten hours. One pair of hands.

Each piece starts as raw yarn, prepared and dyed before it reaches the loom. From the first thread to the last tassel, a single shawl takes between six and ten hours of one weaver’s attention. Our Bandhani pieces take three to four days: the cloth is tied by hand in hundreds of tiny knots, dyed, untied and dyed again, so the pattern emerges in the resist. There is no way to hurry it, and we would not want to.

Two fibres, chosen with care

Merino wool and organic cotton. Nothing else.

We work with only two fibres, and we chose them because being gentle on the environment matters to us. Merino wool is a natural, renewable fibre that keeps you warm without bulk and, at the end of a long life, returns to the earth. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, which is kinder to the soil and to the people who farm it. Both get softer with wear and are made to be kept, not replaced.

No two alike

The irregularities are the signature.

Because every shawl is made by hand, no two are ever the same. A motif sits a little differently, a colour runs a shade deeper, a tassel is tied a touch longer. These are not flaws. They are the mark of the person who made it, and we leave them exactly as they are.

“Connecting people across continents through cloth.”
